FRANKEL, WILLIAM
FRANKEL, WILLIAM (1917– ), editor of the weekly jewish chronicle , published in London. Born in London, Frankel began his professional life as secretary of the British Mizrachi Federation. He was subsequently called to the Bar as a Member of the Middle Temple and practiced in London and on the South Eastern Circuit. In 1955 he was appointed the general manager of the Jewish Chronicle and two years later became its editor, a post he held until 1977. After his retirement, he remained a member of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Chronicle and became chairman in 1991. In 1971 he was appointed by the queen a commander of the Order of the British Empire. He wrote Israel Observed (1980) and was the editor of the annual Survey of Jewish Affairs from 1982 through 1992. Frankel also edited Friday Nights (1973), an anthology of important news as reported in the Jewish Chronicle from 1841 until 1971.
